Best Apps for Focus and Concentration in 2026

The best app for focus and concentration depends on where your focus breaks. Freedom suits distractions across devices, Cold Turkey Blocker suits computers, one sec suits phone habits, Forest suits motivation, Focusmate suits accountability, and NEDIO suits starting one defined work session with a timer and music.

TL;DR

  • Try the free tools first. iPhone Focus costs nothing, and some Android phones include Focus mode.
  • Blocking has the best evidence we found, but few people kept the block on. In a 2025 trial, 119 of 467 participants kept it active for at least 10 of 14 days.
  • For a free computer setup, pair LeechBlock NG with a browser timer such as Pomofocus.
  • In our examples, a focus setup costs from $0 to about $296 a year, so test one app for a week before you pay.
  • No app here does everything. NEDIO runs sessions but blocks nothing, and a blocker won’t define the task for you.

What is a focus app?

A focus app is software that helps you protect a block of work. It might block distractions, time your sessions, change the sound around you, add a partner, or record where your time goes. It supports a task you have chosen, but it can’t choose the task for you.

What are the best focus apps right now?

These 15 apps cover the jobs people usually want from a focus app: blocking distractions, adding friction, structuring a session, changing the sound around you, adding another person, and recording your time. Prices are US prices, checked on each vendor’s pricing page or the App Store in November 2026, before any tax.

How did we compare these focus apps?

We compared each app on six things: the job it does, how hard it is to bypass, the devices it covers, what you get for free, the evidence behind it, and the data it needs. We read vendor pages and peer-reviewed studies. We did not run a controlled head-to-head test.

NEDIO makes one of the apps on this list, so hold it to the same limits as the others. Developers who want coding-specific picks can use our list of focus apps for developers.

Where does your focus actually break?

The right app depends on the moment your last session fell apart. Find the row that matches it. If two rows fit, start with the one that happened first.

Which apps block distractions best?

Freedom covers the most devices here, and Cold Turkey Blocker is built to be hard to undo on a computer. Opal suits rules on a phone, and LeechBlock NG is the free option for a browser.

iPhone Focus and Android Focus mode

Both are free, so try them before you install anything. Apple describes Focus on iPhone as a feature that helps you concentrate by minimizing distractions. On Android, Focus mode in Digital Wellbeing pauses the apps you choose, and you get no notifications from them while it runs.

Android’s version depends on your phone, so check your settings. You can switch off either tool yourself, so they work best when the pull is mild.

Freedom

Freedom blocks websites, apps, or the entire internet on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Chromebooks can’t block apps. Locked Mode stops you from quitting a session, but it needs a paid plan.

Freedom works best if your distractions follow you from laptop to phone.

Cold Turkey Blocker

Cold Turkey Blocker runs on Windows and macOS, with no phone version. The free version handles timed website blocks. Pro costs $45 once in the US, covers every computer you personally use, and adds app blocking, schedules, and locks.

It works best if you keep cancelling softer blockers.

LeechBlock NG

LeechBlock NG is a free extension for Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium browsers. You choose which sites to block and when. As a browser extension, it can’t stop desktop apps or phone apps.

It works best if your distractions live in browser tabs.

Opal

Opal sets blocking rules on iPhone, Android, and Mac. The free plan gives you one rule, with schedules, time limits, and open limits. Pro adds unlimited rules and Hard Mode, which you can’t turn off.

Opal works best if your phone is the main problem and you want blocking to run on a schedule.

one sec

one sec adds a pause before a chosen app opens, which gives you a moment to back out. It runs on iOS and Android, and a browser extension covers websites. The essentials are free.

It works best if you open apps out of habit and a full block feels too harsh.

Which focus apps help you start and finish a session?

Timer apps all structure your time, and they differ in what they add around the clock. The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that splits work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes, separated by short breaks. Our Pomodoro app comparison goes deeper on that category.

Fixed breaks have modest support. A 2023 study of 87 students at a Dutch university compared scheduled breaks with self-chosen ones over one study day. Students who chose their own breaks reported more fatigue and distraction. Task completion did not differ.

Forest

Forest grows a virtual tree while you stay focused, and the tree dies if you leave for another app. The free plan includes the timer, app blocking during sessions, and group focus rooms. Plus adds custom allowlists and analytics.

Older roundups quote a one-time Forest Pro price, but Forest says Pro is no longer available to new users. Forest works best if visible progress keeps you going.

Focus Friend

Focus Friend is a cozy focus timer from Hank Green. A bean character works while you focus and gets sad if you turn the timer off early. Finished sessions earn decorations for its room, and Deep Focus Mode locks distracting apps during a session.

It works best if you want something gentler than a strict blocker.

Pomofocus

Pomofocus is a customizable Pomodoro timer for desktop and mobile browsers. You add tasks, estimate intervals, and run 25-minute blocks with 5-minute breaks by default. Basic features include visual reports. It does not block anything.

It works best if you only need a plain timer and already have the rest of your setup.

Focus To-Do

Focus To-Do combines a Pomodoro timer with a task manager, so your list and your clock sit in one app. It syncs between phone and computer and shows how long you spent on work.

It works best if you want tasks and timing together. Its store listings mention an app whitelist on Android and app blocking on iOS, so test how firm they are before you rely on them.

Session

Session is a Pomodoro-style timer for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The free plan gives you unlimited sessions and two days of analytics. Pro adds custom lengths, a full session log, and website and app blocking on Mac only.

It works best if you work on a Mac and want the timer and blocker in one app.

NEDIO

NEDIO is a focus timer with instrumental music for coding, studying and everyday work, available in the browser, VS Code and Cursor. Set one goal, define what done means, and record the outcome and next step. Pro adds AI Review of your recorded sessions. NEDIO does not read your workspace code, documents or files.

Sprints run for 15, 25, 45, 60, or 90 minutes, with no custom lengths. NEDIO does not block apps or websites, and it has no native phone app. On the free tiers, a sprint stops when your daily audio allowance runs out. A block already under way may finish, for up to 90 minutes, but the next block can’t start until the allowance resets. NEDIO also takes your word for the outcome: it does not check whether you reached your goal.

It works best if your problem is starting, and you want the goal, timer, music, and session record in one place.

Which focus apps use sound to help you concentrate?

Brain.fm and Endel are built around sound, and NEDIO includes instrumental music in its timer. Whether music helps depends on the task, the sound, and the listener, so test any audio on your own work. Our review of whether music helps you focus covers the evidence.

Brain.fm

Brain.fm sells focus audio that it describes as task-based and built on patented neural entrainment. Its pricing page offers a free trial and no permanent free plan.

It works best if sound is your main tool and you will use it daily. Our Brain.fm alternatives guide covers its evidence and cheaper options.

Endel

Endel creates soundscapes that it says adapt to inputs such as time of day, weather, heart rate, and location. The iOS app starts a Free Edition if you skip the payment screen. The focus figures on Endel’s site come from its own whitepaper and survey, so read them as vendor data.

It works best if you want sound that changes through the day instead of a fixed playlist.

Which focus app adds accountability?

Focusmate adds accountability by pairing you with a partner on a live video call. Body doubling is working alongside another person so their presence helps you stay on task, and Focusmate is the virtual version in this list.

You book a 25, 50, or 75-minute session, share your goal, work, and check in at the end. The free plan gives you 3 sessions per week. Plus removes that limit for $8 a month billed annually, or $12 billed monthly.

Focusmate works best if a booked appointment is what gets you started. If video with a stranger puts you off, Forest’s group rooms let you focus alongside friends.

Which focus app shows where your time goes?

Rize shows where your time goes by tracking your apps and websites automatically and sorting that activity with AI. It has apps for Mac and Windows, and its downloads page also lists Linux. A mobile app is listed only on the Enterprise plan.

Rize works best if you want a record without logging anything by hand, and you are comfortable with that level of tracking.

What data does a focus app need to see?

The answer ranges from a goal you typed to your full app and website activity. Check this before you install anything, especially on a work computer.

AppWhat it works withWhat to check
RizeYour app and website activityWhether your employer allows tracking software
OpalApp use through Apple’s Screen Time API on iPhoneOpal says personal browsing data stays on your device
EndelInputs such as time of day, weather, heart rate, and locationWhich permissions you grant
FocusmateA live video call with a partnerWhat your camera shows
NEDIOThe goal, timing, outcome, ratings, and notes you recordPro’s AI Review can send a repeated next-step line to Anthropic unless you opt out. NEDIO does not read your workspace code, documents, or files

Do focus apps actually work?

Some do, for some people, and the best evidence covers blocking and friction on phones. Research on most individual apps is thin, and no study here shows one app beating another for deep work.

Blocking can improve attention, but the block is hard to keep on. A 2025 randomized trial in PNAS Nexus used the Freedom app to block all mobile internet on iPhones for two weeks. Objectively measured sustained attention improved.

Only 119 of the 467 participants kept the block active for at least 10 of the 14 days. The trial tested a complete mobile internet block, not a blocklist for work sessions, and participants knew the study was about smartphones.

Friction reduced app opens. A 2023 PNAS study of one sec reported on 280 participants who stayed for six weeks. Actual openings of their chosen apps fell by 57%. The app’s main developer co-authored the paper, and fewer app opens don’t prove better focus.

Blocking can have costs. In a 2018 field study of 32 information workers, people rated their focus and productivity higher with online distractions blocked. Those with more control over their work reported a higher workload, and they worked longer without breaks, with higher stress.

Results vary by app. A 2023 review of 13 apps in the Journal of Medical Internet Research found effects on phone use that ranged from weak to strong. The strategies it found effective included grayscale mode, app limits, and mixed interventions.

What does a focus app setup cost per year?

In the examples below, a focus setup costs from $0 to about $296 a year, depending on how many subscriptions you stack. They use November 2026 prices, before any tax.

SetupFirst-year costHow it adds up
Phone Focus, LeechBlock NG, and Pomofocus$0All free
Freedom yearly$39.99Billed once a year
LeechBlock NG and NEDIO Pro yearly$59.99$0 + $59.99
Freedom yearly and Brain.fm yearly$139.98$39.99 + $99.99
Cold Turkey Blocker Pro and Focusmate Plus yearly$141.00$45 + $96
Opal Pro, Brain.fm, and Focusmate Plus, all yearly$295.98$99.99 + $99.99 + $96

One-time prices change the math over time. Cold Turkey Blocker Pro costs less than Freedom’s yearly plan from your first renewal, but it covers computers only. Freedom’s $99.50 lifetime plan costs less from your second renewal, at its current discounted price.

How can you test a focus app before paying?

Run one app for one week on real work, and compare it with three sessions without the app.

  1. Choose the failure point from the table in “Where does your focus actually break?”
  2. Log three normal sessions with no new app.
  3. Install one app that targets that failure point.
  4. Log three to five sessions on the same kind of task.
  5. Compare the counts, then apply the decision rule below.

Copy this log. The first two rows are examples.

SessionTask and what done meansPlanned minutesTimes you left the taskFinished?App still on?
Before 1Draft report intro, 300 words254PartlyNo app
With app 1Draft report method, 300 words251YesYes
Before 2
Before 3
With app 2
With app 3

Use this decision rule:

  • Keep the app if it was still on at the end of the week and you left the task less often.
  • Try a stricter tool if you turned it off or bypassed it more than once.
  • Try a different category if it stayed on and nothing changed.

Treat this as a fit check, not proof. NEDIO’s own calculation shows that at five sessions a week, the 95% confidence interval on a weekly completion rate is about ±43 percentage points. One week can show whether you kept using an app. It can’t show that the app caused a change.

If you test NEDIO, the close-out records whether each block reached its goal, so you only need to count the times you left the task.

What mistakes make focus apps fail?

Four setup mistakes can sink a good app.

  1. Installing several apps at once. You won’t know which one made the difference, so change one thing per test.
  2. Leaving a second device open. Cold Turkey Blocker doesn’t cover your phone, and LeechBlock NG doesn’t cover desktop apps. Protect the device you actually reach for.
  3. Blocking what your work needs. A strict block on YouTube fails if your lecture is on YouTube. Set exceptions first, and note that Freedom offers website exceptions on Mac and Windows only.
  4. Removing every break. In the 2018 field study, workers with more control over their work went longer without breaks and reported higher stress. Pair a blocker with a timer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free app for focus?

LeechBlock NG is the strongest free option for a computer, because it has no paid tier to outgrow. On a phone, start with iPhone Focus or Android Focus mode, then try Forest’s free plan if you want a timer with rewards. Pomofocus covers free Pomodoro sessions in a browser.

What is the best focus app for iPhone?

Start with the built-in Focus feature, since it is free. Choose Opal if you want scheduled rules and a Hard Mode you can’t turn off, one sec if you want a pause instead of a block, or Forest if a growing tree keeps you off your phone.

What is the best focus app for Android?

Android Focus mode is the free starting point on phones that include it. Opal, Forest, one sec, and Freedom all have Android apps. Pick Freedom if you also want your computer covered, Opal for rule-based blocking, and Forest for a timer with a visible reward.

What is the best focus app for Mac?

Cold Turkey Blocker suits Mac users who want hard blocks on sites and apps for a one-time $45. Freedom suits people who want blocking across Mac and phone. Opal also has a Mac app. Session Pro pairs a timer with blocking on Mac. LeechBlock NG covers browsers for free, but it can’t stop desktop apps.

What is the best focus app for studying?

Forest suits students who study near their phone, because leaving the app kills the tree. Pomofocus gives you free Pomodoro timing for long revision days. NEDIO offers a Student set of work modes, including Read, Solve, and Revise, along with a timer and instrumental music.

What is the best focus app for ADHD?

We found no study showing that one app is best for ADHD, and an app is not treatment. Timers, blockers, and body doubling tools such as Focusmate are worth testing one at a time. A clinician can advise on care.

Is Focus Friend or Forest better?

Neither wins outright. Focus Friend suits people who want a gentle timer with a bean character on iPhone, iPad, or Android. Forest suits people who want more around the timer, including group focus rooms, scheduled blocking with Time Guard, and a browser version.

Can you get around a focus app?

Often, yes, unless it has a strict mode. iPhone Focus and Android Focus mode can be switched off whenever you like. Freedom Locked Mode, Cold Turkey Blocker’s locks, and Opal Hard Mode are built to resist that, but they only cover the devices where you installed them.

What should you do next?

Think about your last bad session and name the moment it broke. Match that moment to one app, then run the one-week test on real work.

If the break comes at the start, set one goal and one finish line for your next task, then start a free NEDIO sprint. The best app for focus and concentration is the one you still have switched on after a week.
